My Brethren, family and friends,
In a few short days, many of us will pause in our daily labors to celebrate
Easter. Passover will be observed in a few weeks. The calendar also marks
the start of Spring. Less than two weeks ago, we changed our clocks, and
welcomed a few more hours of sunlight to the normal course of our days. All
around us are signs of optimism, growth and light. This time of year provides
us with plenty of reasons to maintain our spirit of optimism.
It can be tempting to give in to the cynicism we see and hear all around us.

Ancient Temple - 12/4/07

The word associated in many people's minds with the Masons is stone. I
remember visiting the VA Hospital one year during the holidays as part of
Howard Lasker's great effort. I walked into a patient's room to bring him
his gifts and told him the presents were compliments of the Masons. He then
proceeded to regale me with stories about how he too had spent his entire
career as a mason, a stone mason. It took me awhile, but I was finally able
to explain the difference. We had a nice chat, which was the purpose of the

Last Monday evening, in Masters Lodge, I received my 45 year pin. Exactly 45
years ago that day on November 12, 1962, just before I entered the Army, I
was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. In preparation for my
message this evening, I found myself reflecting upon that night 45 years
ago. I soon concluded, reluctantly but realistically, that I wished my
understanding of the Craft then was what it is now. My brothers, I will now
share with you the reflections of a 45 year old Mason on the subject of
understanding.

Masons make good men better! We have all heard this phrase. But, have you ever stopped and asked yourself, just how do Masons accomplish this? It is answers to this question I will deal with in my message this evening.

We do not communicate enough with all of our Brothers. I have said this before. In my messages, we have an opportunity to address this situation. Here is a perfect vehicle to let our Brothers know we are thinking about them.
